One of the best things of being an expat is having the time to really explore another country. It is for sure great visiting Italy for a a two week holiday but it is different having the time discover many places. Plus, you can visit touristy places utside the holiday periods! That's why I love weekend trips in the colder month so much. Our last trip went to Lucca, Pistoia and Viareggio for a long weekend.
The summer holidays are over in Italy and I'm back in the office but I came home with many beautiful memories. Living in another country means spending a big part of your yearly holidays to go home and see your family. Fortunately Germany isn't too far and we could go by car to spend the first week at my parents. The second week instead I wanted to use to explore a bit more of my new "home country" and we decided to visit Rome for a few days and I have to say it is as beautiful as everybody had told me before! So how do you make the most of the eternal city if you only have 4 days? When you move to another country, at the beginning everything is new and exciting but quickly things are starting to become normal and especially once you start working, the daily routine starts. Over are the days that every day feels like a holiday! You go to work, clean, cook, watch TV or meet friends..just like home. Even the weekend trips are getting less and brunches, sleep ins and food shopping become your new activities on Saturday and Sunday. We realised that a couple of months ago and I felt like I'm missing out on many things. I mean I live in Italy! People dream of coming here for their holidays and I prefer to watch kids cartoons in my pyjamas?? This is one of the reasons I started this blog. But the best motivation to get out there and see something new are visitors! I love when friends and family are coming and I can show them around, or well - due to my laziness- discover something new together. It is a chance for me to experience Italy like a tourist! |
